Catastrophe Risk in Japan
4/2001
Japan in general is a country facing the risk of earthquakes and windstorms. Because of the density of people and industry around the three biggest cities, Japan is extremely vulnerable for the occurrence of natural hazards, both in the economic as well as the human life aspect. Most of Japan’s 125.6 million inhabitants live on only one-third of the country’s total area because of the mountain ranges. This results in a population density, which is among the highest in the world, estimated in 1995 at 340 persons per square kilometre. It is believed that around 80% of the population live on Honshu in the three metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
